Cob in Motion

It was a happy moment for me when Lom came walking in the hostel. I had met him in San Marcos while I was in a meditation course. He was at that time working with a local family remodeling their comedor (local dining place)

What he was doing there immediately made an impression on me. Lom builds artistic structures out of cob. You can check some of his work out on his website: www.lomscobhomes.com. He has loads of pictures on there where you can see what he has build in the states, argentina and here in Guatemala. He has build ovens, saunas, benches and yes, even a whole school out of cob!

I was very pleased to hear that Lom had some time to do a project here in Los Amigos! Underneath you`ll find a little documentation in photos and videos of this co-operation!

This is the starting point. The place we choose for an artistic long bench to be build...

All material is natural. Earth and white clay are the main ingredients for loms creativity to flow free!

The best thing is that it`s fun to do. And healthy! White clay is really cleansing because it extracts the toxins from the body. In the states a little bottle of this clay is being sold for $ 10.

The day this picture was taken was my 30th birthday! And what a gift did I receive. A massage in a clay mudbath! Wow.

It`s amazing. You can litteraly dip your whole face in clay and it doesn`t enter your mouth or eyes or ears. It really breathes and is very refreshening.

Lom is considering now of building a place where travellers can take hot mud baths in San Pedro, the south of Guatemala. I think it would be great because it really feels very liberating to crawl around in mud like a little kid!

Here the mud is all dried up.. Then the whole face stretches out, incredible feeling!

I might stick with this haircut!

It feels like a second skin!

Lom and I walk to the lake across the island to wash the mud off. One guy on a bike almost hits a car because he`s so shocked to see us... Most locals on the island don`t even recognize me in my alien suit!

When we come back two girls follow out example and take a bath!

A few days later Lom gives us an update of the project!

Jeronimo and Chris help him out whereever they can. And of course nosy Akira is always on the front row! She just loves to be in the middle of all the action.

Here Lom starts building the boddhi tree that rises out of the bench...

And a few days later the roots have merged with this sexy bench thus providing a fresh throne for the cob-prince.

Roots also crawl around the structure!

And here we see the bench after two weeks of hard work.

I a week or 2 we`ll update this blog so you can see the end result!

In the meantime we`re gonna rest in the roots of our being!
